Brain Bank Opens at University of Pittsburgh
We’re excited to share a recent announcement on one of our clients: the opening of the National Sports Brain Bank at the University of Pittsburgh! The NSBB received funding in part by the Chuck Noll Foundation for Brain Injury Research, along with the Pittsburgh Foundation and R.K. Mellon Foundation.
Researchers at the NSBB will focus on the impact of age, genetics, substance abuse, concussions, and other elements in determining the development of Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, or even CTE. By recruiting volunteers well before their passing, the NSBB will conduct a longitudinal study by monitoring participants’ health annually and collecting data to compare with the conditions of their brain after they die.
Additionally, researchers are looking to recruit donations from athletes at all levels of play, regardless of concussion history.
