Sweet Support for a Mighty Cause
The second annual Milkshake & Cookies Event was an incredible show of success and support for Pittsburgh’s own Mid-Atlantic Mothers’ Milk Bank.
Not only did local bakeries turn out for a competition like no other, but Pittsburghers came out in full force too – the space was packed with sweet tooth lovin’ yinzers ready to put their palates to work for a good cause.
Most importantly (at least for those in our line of work) was the show of support from local elected officials. State Senator Wayne Fontana and State Representative Emily Kinkead attended and shared remarks with a small group gathered ahead of the main event.
The best news? Senator Fontana has identified the Mid-Atlantic Mothers’ Milk Bank as the recipient of his Local Share Account funding – putting $1 million towards the comprehensive campaign for the Milk Bank’s upcoming move to the Bellevue community.
Of course, that sweet news set the tone for a wonderful evening of confectionary delight. But so did the cause – supporting the Mid-Atlantic Mothers’ Milk Bank in their work providing pasteurized donor human milk to inpatient and outpatient infants across Pennsylvania.
With a team of about a dozen, the Milk Bank processes tens of thousands of ounces of donated milk each month to serve area hospitals, as well as those in West Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, and Delaware.
Facing a steady increase in demand for donor milk, the Milk Bank has turned to the Pittsburgh community and beyond to support the construction on their new building in Bellevue, recently purchased through the help of local foundations.
We join our friends at the Milk Bank in offering a special shout-out to Senator Fontana for his tremendous generosity, and for recognizing the impact the small but mighty team at the Milk Bank has on families every day.
