Our Journey in Digital Advocacy... and John's Journey in an RV

A couple weeks ago Denny Civic Solutions organized and managed a Digital Advocacy Day on behalf of the Family Care Act, in partnership with Motor Mouth Multimedia and our friends and clients at the Women and Girls Foundation.

Now that the dust has settled (and the final results are in), we’re thrilled to report that the day was a rousing success. All of our social media posts for the day were organic, without any paid “boosting.” Some highlights:

  • The day’s top-performing post, a lunchtime Zoom panel discussion on the impact of paid leave policies on racial and economic disparities, has been viewed more than 2,000 times and has generated 85 comments, 44 shares, and 143 reactions.

  • Additional video messages from PA Senators Maria Collett, Art Haywood, and Tom Killion, PA Rep. KC Tomlinson, and AARP Pennsylvania’s Angela Foreshaw-Rouse received a combined total of more than 2,800 views and 650 engagements.

We encourage everyone to check out all the activity from the June 30th Digital Advocacy Day (including a number of moving personal paid leave stories courtesy of our friends at Motor Mouth) at the Family Care Act Facebook Page. And if you’re interested in learning more about Denny Civic Solutions’ Digital Advocacy Day model - and how you can put it to use in your own work - don’t hesitate to contact us.

Our Strategic Advisors

At Denny Civic Solutions, we pride ourselves on the individuals we partner with. We seek honest, smart professionals with great integrity who are also, quite simply, fun and nice to work with. They fit like a glove, add new perspectives, are loved by our clients, and always teach our team new skills.

As many of you know, we have been fortunate for several years now to call Donna Malpezzi a partner and Strategic Advisor to DCS. Donna’s years of experience, leadership, and insight as former Chief Legal Counsel to the Pennsylvania Senate Majority Leaders Office has helped guide strategy, develop policy and legislation, and understand ideal timing for many clients, such as The Mid-Atlantic Mothers’ Milk Bank. We encourage everyone to learn more about Donna’s stellar record on her website.

And now, we are doubly blessed to expand our partnerships to include former State Senator Jane Earll as Strategic Advisor to DCS! Jane hails from Erie where she practiced law for 12 years, 7 as an Assistant District Attorney, before being elected to the State Senate where she served for 16 years. Jane garnered much insight into statewide politics and issues when she was nominated and ran statewide as a candidate for Lieutenant Governor. She offers enormous benefits to our work at DCS, bringing a wealth of experience to aid our clients on criminal justice reform issues, community and economic development, human services policy, and much more – while also providing a truly in-depth understanding of how our legislative chambers work.

RV Adventures with John

by John Denny

Well, I did it! Checked an item off my bucket list…my family and I took our first RV trip vacation. After watching Robin Williams in RV, I swore I wouldn’t make the same mistakes. Well…

Day 1: Pittsburgh to the Daniel Boone National Forest in KY

No problems at all until my daughter dove into Cove Run Lake and split her foot open. Amazingly, I was able to pull up the jacks, close the side, put down the awning and pull out for the emergency room in record time. Unfortunately, no one told me the water hook up was still connected! Ouch.

Day 2: Kentucky to Nashville

This was a shorter trip and we stayed at a beautiful RV Resort called Safe Harbor. What I learned there is every RV camper has multiple flags displayed and they are all “wavers.”

Folksiness level: 11

Days 3-5: Nashville to Hot Springs, Arkansas

This is where we met our son, currently living in Houston. We rented a really nice Airbnb on a lake and ate pork butt, T-Bone Steaks, and Chicken – all cooked by my children – from our son’s smoker (his motto is basically “have truck, will travel... with smoker” at this point).

The Return Trip:

The two days driving back home were nice, but uneventful until…just as I’m backing the RV into the owner’s driveway, I hit his brick wall! Not a bump or scratch the entire trip, until I return it to the owner while he is standing there watching. Let’s blame it on overconfidence.

In the end? I would I do it again in a heartbeat. And I think – I think – my family would, too.
