The Importance of Integrated Communications: Everything is Connected at the Hip

The year was 2017. “Despacito” ruled the airwaves, and TikTok hadn’t quite rocked the world yet. I was 18 and had just begun running social media platforms, managing websites, and doing graphic design for the first time, and I’ll be honest: despite being a chronically online art student, it was confusing, scary, and downright strange.

With seemingly a million different messages from a million different people to convey, it was hard to communicate effectively.

Flash forward to 2022: as I settled into my new role at Denny Civic Solutions, I found myself sitting in on regular messaging and strategy meetings, so that I could then incorporate that messaging into clients’ social media posts. That same strategy and messaging also informed style guilds I then built for those clients looking to refresh their overall branding. Meanwhile, I watched Kelley, our lead on all things earned media, carry out the strategy and pitch to the press, all while Donna, our strategic partner on government relations, deployed the very same messaging while talking to legislators. As a new employee, it didn’t take long for the DCS approach to become clear:

When it comes to effective communications, everything is connected at the hip.

A lot of organizations will silo the different facets of communications, oftentimes getting freelancers to take on roles, and that’s fine. But whether it’s about rebranding, or media relations, or pushing to get legislation passed, when all forms of communications are connected, they will bloom!

As we kick off 2024, we’d particularly like to highlight our list of services in earned and social media. As a team made up of both young experts and seasoned professionals, we take pride in the combo of new ideas and experience that makes the magic happen.

As I write this, I’m proud to say that my title has shifted to Director of Research & Integrated Communications – which is a fancy way of saying that it’s my job to make sure we always practice what we preach: to make sure everything is connected at the hip
